Healing Depression: A Guide to Making Intelligent Choices About Treating Depression
(Heartsfire Healing Series)
by Catherine Carrigan, Abram Hoffer
From Independent Publisher
The promise of Healing Depression is a tall and complex order, but Carrigan fills it with information and concrete action plans. She begins by explaining the "Catch-22" that many antidepressants decrease serotonin in the brain and it's serotonin that keeps us from being depressed. She goes on to describe how anti-depression medicine destroys organs and creates devastating side effects. Now that she has our attention she writes, "I have an entire arsenal of nutritional and behavioral approaches to alleviate whatever suffering life might naturally throw my way. I am now master of moods, not vice versa." She is talking about herself, a walking casebook for depression with 18 years on medication. Step by step, she found a healthier way, which she shares.
Easy to read and understand, Carrigan gives worksheet action plans. It's a "Do It Yourself, Do It Now, Take Charge" book that engages the reader to action, which is the antidote to depression. Healing Depression is about taking respon-sibility for our body, mind and spirit. It's about individual choices. She covers stress and how to identify and reduce it; how depression is anxiety that comes from attachment to expectations; how our thought patterns, nutrition, and need for control affect us. Mental, physical and spiritual health is about balance and we can master that balance. Carrigan hits us along side the head with a 2x4 then gives us plans, materials, and insight. Using these tools we end up with a house we've built ourselves.
