CHAPTER ONE, Secrets of the Game - "Some Play, Some Watch."

When I heard Charlie was back, I ran to the Integration Center. As many games as he had played, I knew he wouldn't't stay there long.

I saw him as soon as I entered. He looked exhausted, collapsed back into the oversized leather cushions of the booth, the remains of a hot fudge sundae in a bowl the size of a wash basin in front of him. "Hey, Chris," he greeted me with a smile of recognition, waving me to the seat on the opposite side of the table. His boyish grin looked all the more so with the brown goo around his mouth and chin.

"Hey, yourself," I answered as I bent over and patted his shoulder before sliding in across from him. "How are you feeling?"

"Pretty good," he answered slowly as he looked off into the distance as though he was reading a personal indicator of condition. "I'm still a little tired," he said, looking back at me. "No sleep yet."

He always slept when he returned. All of them did. The Game was hard on the players. When Virtual World first opened, almost everyone wanted to play. It was supposed to be the ultimate fantasy. The player could be anything they wanted - only with conditions. The rules say that to play, you had to totally surrender your five senses to the game at the beginning and, secondly, you had to play for real. That last part, the one that so many thought was minor, turned out to be the kicker. To be real, the player had to agree to forget who they were when the game began; otherwise, how real would the illusion be? We called it "voluntary amnesia."

I say that almost everyone wanted to play because I was in the minority that didn't't. I wasn't't about to jump into something that radical. So while others stood in line for a turn, I observed; I kept watch from a distance, but I never played. I could never bring myself to do it. Sure, I was tempted. I looked in on them from time to time. I heard the sounds of the parties, the music and laughter. Those drew in a lot of new players, but not me.

Instead of a player, I became one of the biggest fans. My friends dubbed me "the ultimate game groupie." They accused me of being a "vicarious thrill junkie." I didn't't care, I just loved being around players, listening to their stories. I especially loved to listen to stories of people like Charlie, real players who had played hundreds of rounds. Sometimes they'd let me replay their game tapes. What a rush that could be! They were the guys who knew the ropes, how to play, how to play well. But as much as I admired them, what they did, I just knew it wasn't't for me. I noticed that once they started playing, they couldn't give it up - at least not for a long time - a time longer than I wanted to give.

"So how did it go this time?" I asked.

He forced a feeble smile. "It went well, a good game," he said weakly. He pushed the bowl away and cleaned his face with a napkin.

The waiter appeared instantly. "Would you like something else, sir?" It was part of the service at the Integration Center. Any player finishing a game was served whatever he or she wanted until they had their fill. When they answered the waiter's question with, "Sleep," they were led away to one of the resting rooms.

"Nothing now," said Charlie with a sigh. "I just want to talk to my friend a minute."

The waiter smiled knowingly and backed away.

"So how's it been with you," asked Charlie.

"No big changes. I'm still at GSI." He nodded as I spoke, letting me know he understood, but his eyes were glazed. I was thinking I shouldn't't have come. We sat quietly for a time. I finally broke the silence. "Do you want to talk about it?"

He sighed heavily. "I want to, but not now. I don't think I can without some sleep." His eyelids were beginning to droop.

"I'm going now," I said as I stood and looked for the waiter. He was standing off to the side. As soon as I glanced his way, he started toward us. "I'll come by after you get your rest."

Charlie stood and gave me a hug. I could feel the tiredness in his body. This one had taken it out of him. He gave me a wistful smile as he assured me, "We'll get together soon."

As I walked away from the Center I couldn't't erase Charlie's face from my mind. It took a lot of courage to be a player! The Game was supposed to build us up. I'm sure it does, but the kind of strength the old players have doesn't't come easy. It just wasn't't for me. I mean, I could visit. I would even help. I had - lots of times. I even wore wings when the players expected it. But I could never go there, never take on a life and live it out. The way I saw it, Earth was an OK place to visit. I just would not't want to live there.
