Beyond Religion: Alternative Paths to the Sacred

by David Elkins
A Personal Program for Building a Spiritual Life Outside the Walls of Traditional Religion

This book is aimed at the millions who find traditional religions fail to meet their spiritual needs. Elkins offers validation for this group in eight nontraditional paths, including counseling and psychotherapy, friendship and community, creative expression, and sacred sexuality.

The author, David N. Elkins, Ph.D. delkins@pepperdine.edu
This book is for those who are spiritual but not religious. As a clinical psychologist and university professor, I have been studying spirituality for the past twenty years. This book is the result of that study. I wrote the book especially for those who find that traditional religion no longer meets their spiritual needs and who are therefore seeking alternative approaches to spirituality. The first half of the book describes the spiritual revolution of our day and redefines spirituality, the soul, and the sacred in nonreligious terms. The second half describes eight nonreligious paths to the sacred and shows readers how to develop a personal program for spiritual growth. The book is written in a personal, accessible style. I believe it will touch your heart, nourish your soul, and show you in clear, understandable language how to develop a spiritual life outside the walls of traditional religion. Please feel free to contact me via e-mail with your comments about the book.

Advance praise for the book
"One of the most numinous and thought-provoking books on the soul and spirit that I have encountered. Accessible, poetic, and personal, as well as scholarly and well-grounded, this book is a treasure to read and re-read. It will surely become a beloved classic."
Joan Borysenko, Ph.D., bestselling author of Minding the Body, Mending the Mind, Fire in the Soul, Guilt is the Teacher, Love is the Lesson, and other books.

"Depth, clarity, and an almost poetic style. Both religious and nonreligious readers will find this book provocative and enlightening."
Robert A. Johnson, Jungian analyst and best-selling author of He, She, We, Inner Work, Owning Your Own Shadow, and other books.

"This book is unique. There is nothing like it! In an era where most of the old religions have not been able to sacrifice their rigidity in light of new world problems, Beyond Religion offers readers a way to nourish and enhance their souls."
Stanley Krippner, Ph.D.,coauthor of Personal Mythology and Spir! itual Dimensions of Healing.

"A beautifully written, passionately inspired work. Points us to a new spiritual synthesis, an evocation of soul and transcendence without the baggage. A tangible, compelling testament."
Kirk J. Schneider, Ph.D., author of Horror and the Holy and The Psychology of Existence (with Rollo May).
