Wall St. Journal article about CoachingYou might need a guide to lead you around career pitfalls As guides through the political morass and corporate idiosyncrasies of any company, mentions are critical, career experts insist. They also serve as advocates in the corporate inner sanctum, where most promotions are decided. Multiple mentors are recommended.
You also need both internal and external mentors. Internal mentors can provide road maps to all the organizational bumps and potholes; but mentors outside the compound can offer more objective, independent viewpoints and an industry-wide perspective. When he took a senior human resources position with a former client, says management consultant Anthony J. Mulkern, "A psychologist who regularly worked with high-level executives provided me with invaluable insights on how to best deal with the members of the senior team." If you can't find readily available mentors, consider springing for a professional coach - or expanding your search.... What are the most important qualities of a mentor? Mentors need to be accomplished in their own right. "There are people looking to give guidance whose career progression doesn't warrant credibility," Mr. Chung says. But success alone doesn't make one a good mentor. Look for people you'd like to emulate, both in business savvy and operating style. And be sure it's someone you trust enough to talk about touchy issues. Kathleen R. C. Gisser, a research scientist for Eastman Kodak, says her best mentors didn't just give quick answers to questions, but helped her think through problems. Also, she advises, look for someone who will share their failures as well as their successes. "Some of the most important things good mentors can teach are how they have recovered from heir own setbacks and failures," Ms. Gisser says. Finally, she adds, seek variety.
"Different kinds of people have different things to teach,"
she says. "It's especially important not to 'double your losses',
by always choosing mentors that have similar personalities to your own." Working as a guide, coach and instructor, Wendy Rae Zaritsky utilizes the tool of the Enneagram of Personality Types to assist clients to discover the unconscious motivations behind their behaviors. Bringing these patterns into awareness empowers clients to a heightened level of self-understanding and understanding of others. From this empowered position, clients are able to redirect and eventually transform habitual behaviors. Wendy works with people around the world through telephone consultations. |
