Enneagram ExercisesExercise for Developing the Inner Observer Close your eyes. Bring your attention inward. Steady yourself with your breath. Even though your eyes are closed, can you place your attention in the middle of the room? Focus your attention against the far wall. Bring your attention back to book reading distance. Can you bring your attention back inside your body? Can you tell the difference between the placement of your attention in space? Can you switch your memory to your own personal, private mental space. Your thoughts are uniquely yours. Memory is distinctive. No two sets of memory are the same. Can you shift your attention to a future plan? Plans are distinctive. No 2 plans are the same. Can you shift your attention to a fantasy? can you imagine yourself in Hawaii? Imagination will provide some focus of a scene on a beach; bring some feeling, some mood in the picture as if you were standing in Hawaii. Can you walk in your imagination? Can you see your shoes in your imagination in Hawaii? Can you bring your attention back inside yourself, leaving Hawaii, and open your eyes. The real purpose of this exercise is that there is a link between two aspects of your perception. The personality self that has thoughts, memories, feelings that define your intrepretation of the world. The Inner Observer is the one who watches the thoughts, memories, and feelings. Through practice, you can discern the Inner Observer and call upon it in your daily life.
