ELEVENTH INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON STRESS

November 26 through December 1, 2000
The Mauna Lani Bay Hotel, Island of Hawaii

Dr. Herbert Benson will be this year's Hans Selye Award recipient. President of Harvard's Mind/ Body Medical Institute and a member of the Founding Board of Trustees of The American Institute of Stress, Dr. Benson is widely recognized as one of the pioneers in behavioral medicine, mind /body studies, and the role of spirituality in healing. He has authored or co-authored over 150 scientific publications, and six books. The recipient of numerous awards, he is perhaps best known for defining and elucidating the Relaxation Response and demonstrating its stress reduction properties. In recognition of Dr. Benson's achievements, this Congress will focus on advances in our understanding of the science of spirituality and the significance of subtle energies. We will learn how new information validates the efficacy of certain ancient therapies and can help integrate Eastern and Western Medical practices in a more meaningful fashion.

The Congress will commence on Sunday evening, November 26 with a Welcoming Cocktail Party, Gala Banquet, and Award Ceremony. The schedule of planned Plenary Sessions is:

Monday - November 27th

o Faith, Belief, and Stress Reduction In Health and Healing
Herbert Benson, MD, Chair

Tuesday - November 28th
o Spirituality In The Workplace And The Global Epidemic Of Job Stress
Lennart Levi, MD, Chair

Wednesday - November 29th
o Placebos: Can They Cure Disease As Well As Relieve Illness? Robert Ader, PhD, Chair

Thursday - November 30th
o Subtle Energies: What and Where Are They? How Might They Mediate Faith Healing and Placebo Effects?
William Tiller, PhD, Chair

Friday - December 1st
o Magnetotherapy In The Millennium; The Psychophysiologic Effects of Feeble Electromagnetic Forces and Other Subtle Energies
W. Ross Adey, MD, Chair

Scientific sessions on most days will run from 8 AM to noon or 1PM so that participants can enjoy the serene and stress free ambiance of this magnificent venue. Afternoon Workshops to demonstrate spiritual healing, new technology to reveal unsuspected mind-heart interactions, stress reduction effects of visual imagery in hospitalized patients, Medical Resonance Therapy Music to reduce pain and stress and improve immune defenses, Metabolic-Thermo dynamic treatment of advanced malignancy, and native Hawaiian healing practices are also planned.

ELEVENTH INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON STRESS

The ability of a strong faith and belief, or the power of placebos to relieve distress and promote health are widely acknowledged but difficult to explain utilizing current chemical/molecular models of communication in the body. However, they are comprehensible within the framework of an emerging paradigm of communication at a physical/atomic level that will be featured at this Congress. It is quite clear that subtle energies such as feeble electromagnetic forces can produce significant psychophysiologic changes. We propose that energies of a similar magnitude that are generated internally can have similar effects. EEG and ECG waves may not merely reflect the noise of the machinery of the brain and heart, but rather signals being sent to specialized receptor sites elsewhere in the body through unsuspected pathways. Could these be related to ancient concepts of chi and meridians, prana, and chakras, or Nordenstrom's proposal of biologically closed electrical circuits? Is it possible that this "'energy" can be transmitted from one individual to another? Can it be stored on a computer chip for future use? The body. is its best pharmacy, and our goal is to provide insights into how to tap into this vast innate potential for self-healing that resides in each of us. Learning how to accomplish this may reveal that faith, the feeling of control, intentionality, placebos, acupuncture, homeopathy, as well as subtle auditory, photic, and electromagnetic stimuli all operate via similar mechanisms. Some relevant presentations include:
