Making Money Matters, Too - Profits from Organic Cropping Systems Can equal or Exceed Profits from Conventional Farming
Is there anything that organics can't do? Consumers eat healthier, pesticides stay out of the environment, and farmers make money, too. According to a study by the Hendry A. Wallance Institute for Alternatie Agriculture, farm profits from organic cropping systems can equal or exceed profits from conventional rotations in the Midwestern United States.
The Greenbelt, MD based think tank conducted a study to help farmers, policymakers, and other interested parties assess how a switch to organic production might affe3ct a farm's productivity and profitability. It concluded that if farmers can get market premiums for organic grains and soybeans, their organic production generally delivers higher profits than non-organic grain and soybean production. For example, farmers selling organic corn were paid on average 35% more than their conventional counterparts in 1995, 44% more in 1996, and 73% more in 1997.
