Suppliers of Organic FoodColorado Fox Fire Farms Hines Ranch Beef comes from animals raised
exclusively on grass and forages such as alfalfa, sorghum, cornstalks,
and wheat pasture. The animals are not treated with synthetic hormones,
chemical fly spray, or feed antibiotics. The grassfarmers use a controlled
grazing system designed to mimic the movements of buffalo and antelope
before the range was fenced. This stocking technique allows the grass
to have a rest period during the growing season, helping it to reach full
production. The beef is dry-aged for 12-14 days to improve tenderness
and flavor. Quarters, halves, and whole carcasses are available. James Ranches faced a fork in the road in 1992.
Should the three families living on the ranch turn the land into a golf
course and housing development or should they devote themselves to grassfarming
instead? After spending two years "discussing the future and quality
of life we wanted our children and grandchildren to enjoy," they
chose grassfarming. Today, their many grateful customers rely on their
grassfed beef, pastured poultry, and free-range eggs. The beef is available
in halves, split halves, grill packages, savory packages, roasts, and
ground beef packs. The Savory packages and ground beef are available year
round. Splits, halves, and grill packs are available September through
November. Shipping via 2-day Express Mail is "available but expensive."
Johnson Ranch has a predator-friendly policy
on their grassfed beef ranch. They do not use antibiotics, hormones or
vaccinations. Whole, halves, and split halves of beef are available, as
well as lean ground beef. Their prices tend to be about 10-15 percent
below grocery store retail prices. Lasater Grasslands Beef is one of the largest
pasture-intensive farms in the United States. The beef cattle are raised
and finished on fresh pasture without artificial hormones, antibiotics,
or animal by-products. The ranch is family owned and committed to sustainable
agriculture and the humane treatment of animals. A wide assortment of
mail-order beef is available, including a 35# box of assorted cuts, a
15# Grill Pack Box, and various boxes of steaks, short ribs, hamburger,
roasts, brisket, or tongue. Halves of beef are available as well. Lasater
Grasslands Beef ships anywhere in the United States. Orders can be placed
by phone, fax, or e-mail. Stillroven Farm raises grassfed beef in the
cool, high altitude region of Colorado. The pasture, a mixture of native
grasses and alfalfa, has been free of chemicals for at least three years.
Pastured chicken, pheasants, and local honey are available as well. Products
are available at the farm on Wednesdays and Fridays during the spring
and summer, and on weekends during the winter. Call for times.
