Understanding Ourselves and Others with the Enneagram

"According to Enneagram theory, personality develops as a result of early childhood experiences, and undesirable traits can be modified once they are understood through exploration and study." Newsweek

Each of us has many maps in our head: maps of the way things are and maps of the way things should be (values). We interpret everything we experience through these mental maps or "preoccupation's."

We seldom question the accuracy of these maps. Truthfully, we are usually unaware that we have them. We assume that the way we see things is the way they really are or the way they should be. Each of us tends to think that we see things as they are, that we are objective. This is not the case.

We see the world, not as it is, but as we are.

These nine personality styles are part of a psychospiritual human development system. Ennea means "nine" in Greek, and gram means "model," describing the symbol of the Enneagram. The Enneagram describes these nine different personality styles at work and their unique effect on our personal and business relationships. Each Enneagram style or viewpoint has certain mental and emotional concerns or preoccupation's -- our basic belief systems.

Extraordinarily precise, the Enneagram allows us to examine the mental maps of nine personality styles, thereby clarifying our relationships with family, friends & coworkers. This map of personality styles provides personal direction to maximize our unique potential.

No Enneagram personality type is better than another. Each type is effective, especially when one learns to maximize their style based on understanding their unique attributes along with recognizing that we all interact in significantly different ways.

Furthermore, the Enneagram addresses the complexity of our mental maps, identifying five of the nine points in the symbol that interact to make up who we are as personalities. Personality styles are identified by one point on the Enneagram, reflecting the childhood conditions that created our basic belief systems. Further study of this system reveals all five elements that influence our interpretations of the world -- both inner and outer.

Any issue can be examined through the objective map of the Enneagram to re-frame challenges into opportunities for growth and understanding.

"Finding one's core number can be difficult, however, because most people can't view themselves objectively and because the Enneagram looks at motives as well as actions. There is no foolproof written test, so the most reliable way of getting typed is a paid session with a certified teacher. Also, each core number can be modified by several other numbers, depending upon its position in the Enneagram diagram." Boston Globe

"... the Ennegram has had a profound and enduring impact. On the one hand, its' given me an extraordinary appreciation for the way others in my life see the world and what they're up against. In turn, by trying to see the world from their perspective instead of mine, I find I can often deal with them far more effectively, even compassionately. . . "
