Kabir
Poet and saint born in Benares in 1440 A.D., Kabir lived a simple family life as a weaver. He was probably the first to make serious efforts to unite Moslems and Hindus. He died in 1518.
Rumi
Jelaluddin Rumi was born in the region today known as Afghanistan in 1207. Rumi following in his father's ancestoral line became a scholar until his meeting with the wandering dervish, Shams of Tabriz. Of this meeting Rumi said, "What I had thought of before as God, I met today in a person."
Tagore
Poet, novelist, playwright, musician, painter, lecturer, educator, and mystic Rabindranath Tagore (5/7/1861-8/7/1941), India's greatest modern poet, sang and penned his divine melodies for more than sixty years. His Gitanjali (Song Offerings) helped win him the Nobel Prize for literature in 1913 and brought him worldwide fame. |
